GS 28 as UCC 101

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 4:39 pm

In case you want to learn more about the United Church of Christ a closer look at some aspects of its last national gathering might give you just that:

Worship in the United Church of Christ exists in many shapes and forms. In all its diversity it strives to be faithful to liturgical traditions:

Working for unity in the body of Christ as a whole, General Synod 28 approved the Common Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Baptism. This debate gives you not only insight into the proceedings but also the unique faith journeys our members typically have. Listen carefully to where people come from:

Holy Communion is a “holy” meal, meaning it’s a special time of remembrance. But it must also be relevant to today’s and tomorrow’s people. Transforming this traditional, sacramental piece of Christianity into a flash mob is something that shouldn’t surprise you in a UCC setting:

The denomination opens itself for the culture of Generation X: “They don’t care whether it looks Catholic or feels Baptist. They don’t care if it comes from the Book of Common Prayer or the Stillspeaking Daily Devotional. They aren’t looking for new-thing-religion anymore than they aren’t afraid to retain the old if it is working for them or to throw it away if it is not. This is one of the clearest signs or trends of the emergent church. It borrows from ancient traditions and modern ones, sacred and secular, traditional and contemporary, mainline and evangelical, conservative and liberal. It takes the best that Christianity has to offer while leaving behind the trappings that render it stale, boring, cumbersome or oppressive. This means less emphasis on buildings and more emphasis on mission, less coercing of your neighbors and more concern about engaging in honest conversations with them.”

PS: I was not there in person but I did follow #GS28 almost live ;-)

Big Heart Farms

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 9:00 am

Our church looks and smells like a farm this week. Three groups of children and one adult group learn a lot about the Fruit of the Spirit through this Vacation Bible School. The twenty kids are divided into bananas, grapes and apples to take a closer look at love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness and gentleness. They get to run in the plowing fields and enjoy yummy treats at the watering hole like ants on a log, farm fresh butter, hay bales and pig slop or worms in dirt.

Topical Summer Sermon Series

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 2:36 pm

Typically the preaching in our church tradition follows the Revised Common Lectionary. It has three years worth of suggested sermon scriptures and ensures that the church is exposed to a broad variety of Biblical texts, not just the pastor’s favorites.

July, August and September are going to be topical on our pulpit. The worship planning committee has polled the congregation for weeks and came up with the most wanted topics: fellowship, death, hope, heaven, hell, humor, evolution, Christian Education, What makes a Christian?, stewardship, Native Mission

So this summer the message is specifically geared toward your interests. Which one wouldn’t you wanna miss?
