The public is invited to a Provo-Orem 9/11 Commemoration on Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Provo Seventh-day Adventist Church (255 South 700 East Provo, UT 84606).
The hour-long service will include a flag ceremony by the Metro SWAT Team, music by the Payson High School Bagpipe Band, and a keynote speech by UVU President Matthew Holland. The event is free and open to the public.
It takes two or three, depending on the height of the sanctuary ceiling:

Not only the kids are back to school. Our Bible Journey is back to the library as well. Since the first of January people have had the opportunity to read a Daily Bible passage and eventually share their reading experience during our Bible Journey Meetings on Thursday nights from 6-7 pm. About 20 people are reading along and about 5-8 have gathered weekly. Newcomers are welcome anytime. On Thursday, September 1st , from 6-7 pm you are invited to come to the library!
You can print the whole 2011 reading plan or follow the daily readings online.
The Rev. Daniel Haas has a special reading category on his blog. Please follow that if you will and have discussions in the comment sections.
“Jesus is the answer!” is what churches say way too often. It is way more important to find the relevant questions of faith. Traditionally Christian Education was based on a Catechism, most of which are based on the Apostles’ Creed.
On September 4th, we celebrate Christian Education Sunday. There will be a ceremony of appreciation for the teachers of our congregation and there will also be an open mic sermon for your faith questions. For starters, read through the Apostles’ Creed and from there bring your questions to church.
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
As a UCC congregation we receive the historic creeds and confessions of our ancestors as testimonies, but not tests of the faith.
On August 1st Emily Spencer started as our new music director. Here is a her introduction:
I extend my warmest greetings to the members of the Provo Community Church! I look forward to serving you as your new Organist and Director of Music. I have had the blessing to work in music ministry in various capacities for almost twenty years, and it has been one of the greatest joys and blessings in my life. As a young person, I was blessed with wonderful experiences, in which I was able to help others come closer to God and feel God’s love for them through music. Through these experiences, I felt called to devote a large part of my life to music ministry, and the last twenty years have been a wonderful, joy-filled journey. I particularly love organ, vocal and choral music. When it comes to music, my greatest joy and end goal is to glorify God; to express my profound gratitude for His love, and to assist others in doing so as well, through lifting their voices in praises unto Him.
I will share a few details “about me”. I have worked in music ministry for many years, and I had the opportunity to earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Organ Performance from Brigham Young University. I studied organ with Douglas Bush, who provided the beautiful music for you last year at the Christmas Eve candlelight service. I have served as organist for many denominations, including United Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Lutheran, and the LDS Church. In addition to the organ and piano, I have a lot of experience with singing, conducting choirs, and teaching music to children. A few years from now, I have plans to pursue a doctorate in Music Composition and Organ.
I have played concerts in the United States and Europe, including Germany, Belgium, England and the Netherlands. I speak German and Dutch, and enjoy visiting the Germanic countries as much as possible—I recently made my first tour of Switzerland. My brother and one of my “best friends”, Dr. Tom Spencer, works as a German Professor at BYU. We have always enjoyed German culture! I come from a very large family of twelve children, and have twenty-three nieces and nephews (and counting…!). Aside from music, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, doing genealogy work, studying languages, studying European history, writing and gardening.
Again, I look forward to serving you and worshiping with you.
Friends in Christ,
Emily Spencer
