On Sunday, October 2nd, the Rev. Daniel Haas will preach on “We Are the World”. Please join us at 10:30 am at Provo Community United Church of Christ, 175 N. University Avenue. We will have Holy Communion to commemorate World Communion Sunday. World Communion Sunday is the first Sunday in October and is celebrated in all member churches of the National Council of Churches. On this day we celebrate our oneness in Christ the Prince of Peace, in the midst of the world we are also called to serve. A world evermore in need of peacemaking.
Come to St. Mary’s Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 1, at 10:30 am – ALL critters invited! Come join us for the annual Blessing of the Animals. Bring your family pet be it a dog, cat, horse, llama, hamster, or parakeet. We will be happy to bless them all. Please note: Dogs on leashes… and anything squiggly, please put in a cage! St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is located at 50 West 200 North, just North of Provo Community United Church of Christ.
On Saturday, October 1, you are invited to join us for a hike in Little Cottonwood Canyon on the trail to White Pine Lake. It is 4 1/2 miles one way with an elevation gain of 2460 ft. This can be a good trail for beginners with an overlook 1 1/4 mile 500 ft elev. gain and a meadow at 2 miles 800 ft. elev. gain. People can hike up this far and turn around if they can’t make it all the way. There is a lake from the same trailhead we could take that is shorter if everyone desires.
Directions:
The trailhead is easy to get to: From I-15 take the 9000 South exit #295 at Sandy, folow 9000 South; Eastly all the way to the foothills and follow signs to Little Cottonwwod Canyon, and Snowbird and Alta. From mouth of canyon it is 5 1/2 miles to White Pine Trailhead on right side of road. You will pass a campground then come to sharp curve in road and pass a sign that says “White Pine Slide Area”, the turnoff to trail is just after this sign. Snowbird is just 3/4 mile up the road so if you are at Snowbird you missed the turn. This is a paved Hwy all the way.
Schedule:
Car-pooling at the church at 7:30 am, drive an 1 1/2 hr to Trail Head, hiking by 9 AM., back to the cars by 3 pm. An early start is good as the parking at the Trailhead fills up fast on weekends.
Trailgate Party:
Carl Burman will have a cooler full of drinks and snacks so we can have a “Trailgate Party” after the hike. We can also go to Snowbird OctoberFest if you would like. It is free to walk around and listen to the music although they charge for the beer and Brats. But it is fun, they have arts and crafts for sale, an Alpine snow slide, a bungie jump etc.
Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas. The Utah Department of Transportation is clsoing Provo Center Street under I-15 beginning as early as Saturday, October 1. This closure, along with the existing closure of the southbound I-15 off-ramp at Provo Center Street, will remain in place through mid-November.
“That is extremely inconvenient for all the people in our church that have to travel all the way from Sugarhouse or Spanish Fork respectively. We are lucky the closure will end around the time the real Advent season starts. I am grateful for UDOT’s understanding of this liturgical matter”, comments the Reverend Daniel Haas.
Here is a video explaining the construction activities:
Listen to a sermon by the Reverend Mirjam Haas-Melchior focusing on body, mind and soul. It was delivered at Provo Community United Church of Christ on September 25th 2011.

We are the church of new beginnings:
As a denomination we started out in the 1600s when the pilgrims made new beginnings for themselves at Plymouth Rock. As a denomination in the 1700s we made new beginnings by ordaining the first black pastor in a mainline church. As a denomination in the 1800s we made new beginnings by ordaining the first woman pastor. As a denomination in the 1900s we made new beginnings by ordaining the first openly gay pastor. As a denomination we made new beginnings by spreading to strange new places like Utah and the Micronesian islands. Here we are in Provo, Utah in 2011, after hundreds of years of new beginnings.
Today we have taken yet another leap of faith and tied together all the loose ends of extravagant welcome that God has spread among us. At today’s congregational meeting the members of Provo Community United Church of Christ after years of intentional deliberation approved
- A pronouncement on a United Church of Christ Ministry and Witness with Micronesians
- Statement “Kirche auf Deutsch”
- and the following Open and Affirming statement:
We welcome all who seek spiritual growth into our reconciling community. This includes persons of every age, gender, race, national origin, faith background, marital status, family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, mental and physical ability, economic and social status, and educational background. We invite all persons no matter who they are or where they are on life’s journey to participate in the life, leadership, employment, ministry and mission of this family of God’s people and to share in worship and sacraments and to enlist in the work of this local church as it serves this community and the world.
Habitat for Humanity of Utah County will be holding its annual International Day of Prayer and Action for Human Habitat event on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Provo Community Church, located at 175 North University Avenue, Provo. Dean Jackson, Lead Pastor at the Rock Canyon Church, and Daniel Haas, Pastor at the Provo Community Church, will be speaking. Well known soloist, Serena Benish, and her students will be performing. Members of the community are encouraged to attend this uplifting event.
The International Day of Prayer and Action, observed on the third Sunday in September, is a time when the entire Habitat for Humanity community is urged to come together in prayer for those in need of shelter. Through prayer, Habitat for Humanity continues to make a dramatic difference in the lives of people around the world. Many volunteers are drawn to this ministry after hearing God’s call and seeking God’s guidance through prayer. Other prayers are answered when families and communities grow in the shelter of God’s grace. The hurdles of funding and building homes are overcome through the miracles of prayer.
September 17 the new Intermountain Association will have our fall meeting. It will take place in Green River Wyoming at the Union Congregational UCC. The event is from 10-3. Everyone is invited so please plan to attend. Car pooling will be available. If there is any questions please contact Bev Larsen. She can be reached at 801-375-9115 or email her at office@provocommunityucc.org
