Listen to a sermon by the Rev. Daniel Haas based on Jonah 1:1-6,11-17 and Mark 1:16-20. It was delivered at Provo Community United Church of Christ on January 29 2012.

Meet our new music director Ceri Benson

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 2:11 pm

Ceri Benson just started and was duly installed in today’s service. She is now in charge of playing for our worship services and leading the church choir. She sent a little spiel about herself:

“I suppose the main thing to say about myself is that I love to play the organ and I love directing choirs. I have been studying those two fields at BYU for the last 6 ½ years. My undergraduate degree is in piano and organ and I am just about to finish my masters degree in organ performance. My first class on my first day at BYU was a choral conducting class. I didn’t know anything about choirs or choral conducting at the time, but this was the start of a whole new life for me. I spent my years at BYU very involved in the choral scene. I sang in the choirs and I played organ with them. After finishing a masters, I hope to go on for a doctorate degree in organ performance with an emphasis in church music.

I grew up in Minnesota in a country house where I was able to spend my childhood outside running around with the dog and cats, gathering eggs from the chickens, and eating apples off the trees. I am one of the youngest of eight siblings. There is quite an age span from oldest to youngest and because of that I was able to grow up with nephews like they were my brothers. Living out in the country and being from a big family, I learned to be a hard worker. I learned how to garden and take care of the house and yard. Minnesota, besides being known for cold winters and the “Minnesotan accent”, is also known as “the land of 10,000 lakes”. I loved living near lakes where I could spend a lot of days swimming and canoeing. When I moved to Utah, though, I was able to discover a love for mountains and hiking. I’ve hiked to the top of Mount Nebo, Timpanogos, and of course Y Mountain. It was during my time in Utah that I also discovered running. I never thought I would enjoy such a thing, but I do now. I ran my first half marathon in August and plan to run another on April 21, the day after I graduate from BYU.”

Fr. Justin Havens shares the following invitation:
“I pray this email finds you and your folks all well in this new year. I was writing to invite you and your people in the Orem/Provo community to come visit us this coming Friday night from 6-9pm at our newly-established Holy Apostles Orthodox Christian Mission church(280 W. Center St in Orem, turn between Holiday gas station and post office). Our goal is simply to introduce ourselves to all the people of Orem/Provo, regardless of religious affiliation, to let everyone know who we are, and that we are here to assist in the community.  So, I humbly ask that you join us, or at least stop by this Friday night to meet us, see our chapel, and have a snack and say hello. I look forward to meeting you. I f you would be willing to forward the attached flyer to faithful congregation so that they can join us, I would be most thankful. I pray this new year is blessed and fruitful for you, your family, and people.”

“For to baptize the Negro and admit him into membership in the Christian church was to recognize him as a man, a child of God, an heir of Heaven, redeemed by the blood of Christ, a temple of the Holy Ghost, a standing type and representative of the Savior of the world, one who, according to the apostle Paul, must be treated no longer as a servant, but as a beloved brother.” (Frederick Douglass)

Listen to a sermon by the Rev. Daniel Haas combining The Baptism of Christ and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day based on Genesis 1:1-5 and Mark 1:1-11. It was delivered at Provo Community United Church of Christ on January 15 2012.

Confirmation Class underway

Category: Uncategorizedadmin @ 9:44 am

Youth on the brink of adulthood experience many radical changes in their lives: Puberty is when parents start acting weird. Revisiting the faith you were brought up in or exploring your spirituality for the first time are great opportunities during this important period in life. Confirmation traditionally has been a youth’s approval and reaffirmation of the Baptism they received as an infant. Nowadays it can also a preparatory journey for Baptism itself. It is both challenging and fun. Our confirmation class had a great time at their opening retreat last weekend.
